Dann entlang der Salzwüste des Schot-el-Dscherid, deren Gefahren schon Karl may perhaps beschrieben hat, und quer durch die Dünenlandschaft des Großen Erg. Hier stehen sie vor einer Landschaft, die es nicht gibt, vor einer Fata Morgana. In Beni Isguen, der heiligen Stadt der Mozabiten, spüren sie dem Geheimnis der Frömmigkeit nach, die den Einwohnern Frieden und Reichtum gebracht hat. Auf dem Plateau de Tademait entdecken sie den 'Garten des Nichts', der Allah gehört, wie die Mohammedaner sagen, wo aber auch Sheitan, der Teufel haust. In der Oase Ain Salah machen sie in der Bar des Blauen Targi Bekanntschaft mit den Gebräuchen der Tuareg, geraten am Wendekreis des Krebses in einen Sandsturm und suchen in den Steinzeithöhlen nach alten Felsmalereien zwischen den Kritzeleien heutiger Sahara-Touristen. Endziel ist der Gipfel des 2800 Meter hohen Assekrem, der höchsten Erhebung des Hoggar Gebirges. Hier hatte der 1916 von Tuaregs ermordete französische Missionar Pater
Foucauld in einer Einsiedlerklause gelebt.
Er schrieb in sein Tagebuch: "...Die Wüste ist mir im Tiefsten eine Wonne. Im Angesicht der ewigen Dinge fühlt guy sich gleichsam überflutet von der Wahrheit..."
Auf der gleichen path folgte ein Jahr später ein Fernsehkollege des Autors mit seiner Lebensgefährtin.
